Have you been participating in the Goose Goose Duck EQ8 Block Drawing Challenge? I have been super excited to see participants drafting both the blocks and quilts with ease as they work through the short (6 minute) videos for the challenge.
Today is Day 3 of the challenge. Here is the video for today's challenge. If you aren't in the challenge, see what the group is working on.
It is not too late to join in. If you would like to sign up and receive all the videos for the challenge, you can enroll here.
Goose Goose Duck Creativity
Here are some of the quilts that were shared in the Learning EQ Facebook Group for Block 1 and Block 2 of the Goose Goose Duck Challenge. Feel free to click on the link and request to join (if you aren't already a member).
As you look at the quilts, notice the different fabrics and colors used in the quilts. Some quilters were even inspired to try different layouts and different border designs. I love being able to look at every one of these and enjoy the creativity of those in the challenge. Goose Goose Duck Block 1Goose Goose Duck Block 2
Are you excited to get started on the Goose Goose Duck Challenge? I've been busy working on the free videos this week along with the free quilting patterns and am looking forward to seeing your designs. If you haven't signed up for the challenge, please make sure to do that today. You won't want to miss any of the emails.
I also have two getting started videos to set you up for success. The first is on adding a new fabric collection from Electric Quilt. The second is on posting to a particular Facebook post (so we can see your work.) Have a great weekend. Goose Goose Duck Challenge starts on Tuesday
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 10th.
This is the starting date for a new two week challenge. During this free challenge I will be presenting both drafting (using EQ8) and piecing instructions for six blocks. And at the end of the challenge, you will be invited to join a webinar where I will share a number of setting options for your blocks.
I've been asked by those that are in one of my classes or receive my weekly newsletter if they are automatically enrolled in the challenge. The answer is NO. So please sign up using the link above if you would like to participate in the challenge.
Using the Free Fabric Downloads from Electric Quilt
Do you enjoy the fabric and quilt inspiration on the Do You EQ website? Each month Electric Quilt gifts us with a free fabric download that contains a perfectly cropped and sized fabric library with one of the latest fabric collections.
In this tutorial, I will share with you how to download that free fabric collection and populate a project with a fabric collection (or two). I chose to work with two collections -- Twilight Chic by Island Batik (issued in March 2019) and Icicle by Island Batik (issued in July 2019). You can download the fabrics referred to in the video here. I will be using fabrics from these two collections for my upcoming Goose Goose Duck challenge. Posting a Design from Electric Quilt to a Facebook Post
For those that are participating in the Goose Goose Duck challenge, I would love to see what you are drafting during the challenge. The best way to share your design will be in a Facebook post.
I will be setting up a separate post for each block designs and will give you a link to the post in the email. You will also be able to locate the posts on the Learning EQ Facebook Group.
Although this was a short week -- there is a lot happening in this bog post.

Custom Set in Electric Quilt 8 can sometimes seem scary to use. Custom Set is the layout that gives you a blank canvas and you can put your blocks where ever you want on that canvas.
Learn my tricks for creating a small quilt layout with two sizes of blocks. It is very doable. The layout is perfect for populating with any three and six inch blocks. In the video I include drafting the bow tie and maple leaf blocks and then including them in the custom set layout.
Here are the quilts from the video.
Tech Know Quilters July Apply What You Learned Challenge
At the end of each month, Tech Know Quilter members are encouraged to share a block or quilt and provide insights on what they learned. Here are their inspiring results.
Joyce Drenth I have been working on a Northwest Suburban Quilters Guild (NSQG) challenge quilt as a component of our upcoming Time Flies Quilt Show. Challenge requirements include: use 4 ruby (40th anniversary gem) flying geese blocks to celebrate four decades, add embellishments, meet AQS Ultimate Guild Challenge competition size requirements, and showcase a personal reflection of how 'Time Flies". My design uses 40 wedges. After incorporating the four ruby blocks, each of the remaining 36 geese blocks chronologically document the quilt style and completion date of a selection of my quilts. I photographed my quilts and resized the pictures to fit into the 40 wedges. This quilt serves as a documentation of my quilting journey through time so that pictures of my quilts are captured in one place. It also keeps my 'goals' front and center for the future. I drew the shoe, bucket and scissors after taking Kari’s applique class. I then proceeded to sew a 3-D bucket, wool pincushion, beaded strawberry, high-heeled shoe, scissor hands applique'd over Peltex, yo-yos for the 4 quadrants of the clock face, clock and hourglass charms, beads and a bucket list of yet-to-be-completed quilt styles flowing out of the bucket. Forty ruby prairie points celebrate NSQG's 40th anniversary year. The 4 o'clock charms and the scissor hands reflect the 4 decades of our guild's existence. Challenge quilts were displayed and voted upon last night at our guild meeting. I’m happy to report that I won first place. Other EQ Designs and Quilts by TKQ Members

Creating a lone star quilt design in Electric Quilt 8 is super simple. This quilt has only two blocks (and one comes from the Electric Quilt library). And the other can be drafted in under a minute -- promise!
Then use a current fabric collection to color the quilt. I used the free fabric of the month collection for August 2019 on the Do You EQ Website. The collection is Rosemary Cottage by Andover. Have you found this collection in your favorite quilt store?
Here is the quilt from the video.
I would love to see pictures of your lone star quilt (either in EQ or made with "real" fabric.)

A couple of months ago we added a level in Tech Know Quilters for more advanced users. This group is given an opportunity to focus more on their own projects and designs, while still receiving support and encouragement.
During July, this group was challenged to create a block or quilt around the theme Home. Here are the results from the challenge.
Adrienne Quinlan I came across this picture by John Kelly of the bridge in my fathers home town of Killaloe in Ireland. I loved the shadows. I divided each of the elements into 4 and these each measure 16in square, the small squares measure 1in so I should be able to make them bargello style. This version measures 72in square including the borders.
Wanda Hizer This is the Row by Row I designed for our local quilt shop a year or so ago. The theme was Home Sweet Home. I also wrote and diagrammed the pattern for them. I've done all their Rows since 2016 and I design several block of the month programs for them, too. This picture is the actual pieced row. The big chicken is an actual landmark and is a KFC restaurant.
Joyce Drenth I had been planning to do a Birds of a Feather Flock Together family heritage quilt with a modern flair. So I drafted some blocks prior to this challenge. I have since changed my mind about the ancestry plan but I have many birds already stitched. Perhaps this Home Sweet Home quilt will allow me to use them and have a cute little quilt after all.
Susan Sorensen I'm making a wedding quilt for my assistant's daughter, I don't know her well, so it has been a real challenge which I have been pondering since January. This challenge has been a real motivator. Her favorite color is olive green, not something I would ordinarily use except as an accent color, if ever. And the wedding is now only 4 months away, so I have to limit the complexity of the blocks. I designed about 10 quilts for this project, but when the mother of the bride saw this one in EQ she said this is the one. I plan to use a several tone on tone green and blue fabrics for the main half rectangle triangles and a variety of low volume fabrics for the background, some will be half rectangle triangles. I'll quilt more of the triangle shapes into the background. Have EQ designs with and without 1 inch sashing, will decide about sashing after some of the blocks are on the design wall.
Sharon Osborne I hope mine is legal since I did design this a few months back but never showed it. I was involved in a "Home" Challenge with another group I belong to and this is what I designed. I'm from Colorado so that is the reason for the Colorado flag.. Trees for the mountains and earth for our big home. □
Kathy Autry This is a quilt that I just finished FMQ on this month . Now I just need to do the binding. It is a Xmas gift for my grandaughter who just decorated her bedroom around Artic Wolf theme. I went back to Kari's classes on using a panel and then put it into EQ and started designing other blocks in the custom setting. I used a Deb Tucker quilt "Rangeley Wall Quit" as the start of my design and put two of her star blocks into my quilt. I love to do FMQ so I put in lots of negative space and created my own designs in those blocks. I did a lot of FMQ on the panel hoping to give depth to the picture. I used Hobbs wool and quilters dream for batting to help give the panel a trapunto look.
Back to School
Many parts of our country are already sending kids back to school. And if the kids aren't back, the teachers are probably busy preparing for their new classes. This quilt is in honor of teachers and school workers.
It is a two color red and white quilt -- so super simple to color. And a fun quilt to piece once the drafting is done.
Here is the school house quilt from the video. The quilt finishes 31" x 29".
